Met Office issues thunderstorm warning for northern Scotland, warns of flooding and power cuts
LONDON, England — The UK Met Office has issued a Yellow Thunderstorm Warning for parts of northern Scotland on Wednesday, warning that heavy rain, lightning, hail, and strong winds could trigger flash flooding, travel disruption, and power outages.
The warning will be in effect from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with forecasters expecting 20–30 mm (0.8–1.2 inches) of rain within one to two hours, and up to 50 mm (2 inches) in a few locations over three to six hours. Slow-moving thunderstorms could lead to localized flash flooding and significant disruption to the transport network.
The Met Office said the main risks include:
- Flash flooding affecting homes and businesses.
- Damage from strong winds, lightning, and hail.
- Hazardous driving conditions and possible road closures.
- Delays and cancellations to rail and bus services.
- A slight chance of power cuts and disruption to other essential services.
The warning covers parts of:
- Angus
- Perth and Kinross
- Aberdeen
- Aberdeenshire
- Moray
- Highland
The Met Office is urging residents to secure loose outdoor items, prepare emergency supplies, and monitor the latest weather updates as storms develop.
