14-year-old boy dies after entering River Thames amid hot weather in London

LONDON, England — A 14-year-old boy has died after entering the River Thames at Millwall Outer Dock in east London as temperatures climbed above 30°C (86°F).

Police, firefighters, paramedics, and a police helicopter launched a major search after the teenager got into difficulty in the water on Monday. After nearly four hours of searching, officers recovered the boy’s body from the river.

Witnesses said groups of young people had been gathering at the dock in recent weeks to cool off during the hot weather.

Following the tragedy, police renewed warnings about the dangers of swimming in open water during periods of high temperatures, urging the public to stay out of rivers, docks, and other waterways where hidden hazards and strong currents can quickly become life-threatening.

The incident remains under investigation.
