Two rockets launched from Lebanon hit Israel

Two Katyusha rockets fired from Lebanon landed into Israel on Friday, prompting retaliatory fire across the border, security officials said.

UNIFIL issued a statement saying it did not receive reports of casualties in either Israel or Lebanon, urging the two sides to practice self-restraint and abide by their commitment to refrain from any aggressive acts.

NOW’s correspondent in the South reported that fields surrounding the Al-Qleileh in were in turn struck by 15 Israeli rockets. Ambulances rushed to the scene, while Israeli helicopters flew over the region.

The report also said that the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and UNIFIL units are combing the fields in the region from where the Katyusha’s were launched in search of the rockets’ platform or possible additional rockets.

The report added that UNIFIL launched an investigation and is coordinating efforts with the LAF and Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to identify those responsible for the incident.

Residents of northern Israel said they heard explosions, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

“Debris from at least one Katyusha rocket fired from South Lebanon were found in the area of the city of Nahariya and Kibbutz Gesher Aziv,” a police official told AFP.

The Lebanese official said two rockets were fired earlier from Al-Qleileh, 15 kilometers from the border.

Public radio said the Israeli armed forces responded with artillery fire against the Lebanese village from which the rockets were fired.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment.

In February, the Israeli artillery bombarded Al-Qleileh in response to similar rocket fire. There were no casualties on the Lebanese side, and a few Israelis were lightly wounded.
